The birth of a lifelong mythology addiction

This image. This is THE IMAGE. The only image one would ever need the internet for. The image that basically raised me. I could gush about this single image for hours and hours, but nobody would listen to me, so I'm letting it all out here.

some 2013esque Percy Jackson fanart
Let me set the scene:
A random 6 year old girl is sitting around her room in 2015, gazing at her books. Suddenly she finds Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, a book she had picked up a while ago but never actually read. Grabbing it off her shelf, she opens the first page and BAM! She's 11 years old dressed up in a camp half blood t-shirt, wearing a cringe orange cap and drinking a coke that is inexplicably blue in color.

I was absolutely obsessed with the Percy Jackson series, as well as the Heroes of Olympus, Magnus Chase, the Kane Chronicles and literally anything that came from Uncle Rick's desk. Yes, I had the Pinterest boards, the awful tattoo ideas that I am eternally grateful I never got inked permanently, and also some truly horrible fanfic.

I DREW THIS IN MY PERCY JACKSON CLASS. YES YOU READ THAT RIGHT I WENT TO CLASSES FOR A LITERAL BOOK SERIES, WHO EVEN MADE THOSE???

Although this period in my life was so cringe that the flashbacks I get when I hear the words 'Ask the Seven' could rival a war vet, I still think it was extremely fun. I may have been cringe, but I was free. So, why am I writing this apart from embarrassing myself more than I already have? Well, I'd like to make a public service announcement to any other weirdos (read: Percy Jackson fans) who despised the movies. Can you imagine if the movie was actually good and they added songs? Well, they made that.

if nobody got me, i know ask the seven Pinterest boards got me

'The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical' is a stage adaptation of the first book in this Rick Riordan series. It combines fantasy, humor, and rock music to bring the story of Percy and his adventures to life. It premiered off-Broadway in 2017 before embarking on a national tour in 2019. A Broadway run followed, starting in October 2019 at the Longacre Theatre. The book was written by Joe Tracz (please tell me I'm not the only freak who seriously enjoyed 'Be More Chill') and is set to a pop-rock score written by Rob Rokicki.

The story is a faithful adaptation of the first book, following the titular character, Percy Jackson. After a disastrous trip to the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art (I sang that entire name in my head), 12 year old Percy discovers he's a demigod, the son of Poseidon. Wrongly accused of stealing Zeus’s lightning bolt, Percy sets out on a quest with his friends Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood to find the bolt, clear his name, and prevent a war among the gods. The story is hilarious, and in that way is definitely a far better adaptation of the musicals than whatever this is
my 9/11

The show has some real bangers in there, my personal favorite being 'Prologue/The Day I Got Expelled' where Percy recounts the events leading up to him discovering that he is a demigod. I never realized how influential the phrase 'I didn't want to be a half blood' were to my childhood until I heard it sang on stage and all but screeched. If you're a fan of the books, you will be a fan of the musical, it's well put together, goofy, and has some truly catchy songs, which were the things that drew me to the books as well.

As excited as I am about the season 2 of the Disney plus adaptation, if any fan tries to tell me that the show is the first faithful adaptation of the books, I WILL NOT HESITATE TO MENTION THE TIME UNCLE RICK BACKED UP THE MUSICAL. Alright I'd write a conclusion paragraph but I don't feel like it so just... stop reading?
